Kauko Tuomala (1918-1944) Knight of the Mannerheim Cross No.134 He was rifleman and scribe in 39th Infantry Regiment (JR 39), 13th Division, during the Winter War (1939-40), and in Continuation War (1941-44) he served as scribe NCO and leader of anti-tank gun in 8th Gun Company, 3rd Division. He also served in office duties at 18th Division's HQ. On the morning of June 26, 1944, Corporal Tuomala, himself as the gunner, destroyed 8 tanks, 2 assaultguns and 4 artillery tractors along the Heinjoki road, east of Viipuri. He was killed moments later, when his PaK 40 received direct hit during katyusha rocket barrage. His actions had decisive effect to the fact that the enemy attack was repelled, and the Mannerheim Cross (2nd class) was awarded to him posthumously the following day. During the wars he also received 2nd class Medal of Liberty. Promotions: Korpraali (Lance Corporal) - 17.7.1940 Alikersantti (Corporal) - 15.6.1941
