Leader of "Lotta Svärd"

Fanni Luukkonen (1882-1947) The head of women's voluntary auxiliary organisation "Lotta Svärd" from 1929 to 1944. Fanni joined Lotta Svärd already after the civil war of 1918 and later in 1929 became the leader of the organisation. During her time the organisation grew to 242 000 members, making it the largest women's organisation in Finland and largest voluntary auxiliary organisation in the world, while the total population of Finland was less than four million. Marshall Mannerheim awarded her the Cross of Liberty 1st Class with swords, in June 1940. She was the first woman to receive the decoration and only woman to receive it with the wartime ribbon, carrying the cross on her neck as usually only soldiers do. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotta_Sv%C3%A4rd
