Soviet casualties

Piles of Red Army casualties in Cholm, January 1942. This picture is provoking. The dead on the picture are obviously stabled there by the Germans, waiting to be buried. But we know Red Army infantry used to attack fixed German positions like this, in packed dense waves of men, machine gunned in large masses. The guys behind had to crawl over their fallen comrades in the front rows. The German soldier Hans Roth observed in Minsk in 1941 how two young surviving Russians, "mad by fear", ran back to their own lines after a Red Army human wave was stopped, only to be machine gunned by their own commissars.
