from the Roma battleship ammo depot. She sunk with Admiral Bergamini and most of crew. September 9 1943. Bergamini didn't want to surrender the fleet following Badoglio and the king in the never seen shame of delivering a fleet to the enemy. He was thinking to a scuttling or to a internment in a neutral port. In fact the commander of cruiser Attilio Regolo, after the sinking of Roma, with some destroyers went to the Baleares following the former ideas of Admiral Bergamini. The rest of the fleet followed the official orders. The paradox of the German attack was that they caused what they feared and probably wouldn't happen with Bergamini alive. DVX
