After their final suicidal attack on the Americans seeking to recapture Attu fails, Japanese dead, mostly at their own hands, carpet the Tundra. The Soldier in the fore-ground is one of many who turned themselves into human bombs, clutching a grenade to his chest as he hurled himself on the attackers. 'thats what the caption in the book says.
