By late 1944 Germany was scraping the bottom of the barrel to find fit and able men... A second source of manpower was the Volkssturm.

The picture was taken the morning of the 19th September 1944 during the visit of Lieutenant General in Plohera Milsbeek for organizing resistance to the Anglo-American landing forces in the zone of their landing «N» («Landing Zone N») during "Operation Market Garden".
