The city of Budapest, with a population of almost a million, represented a novel obstacle to the Soviet forces accustomed mainly to warfare on the open steppe. The challenge of Axis defensive positions established in the sturdy, multi-story brick buildings of Budapest, prompted Red Army generals to rely fairly heavily on the firepower provided by massive assault weapons, like this truck-mounted Katusha rocket launcher being loaded by its crew in this photo.
