26 January 1945: Canadians launched an attack at Kapelsche Veer in the Netherlands during the Second World War. During the last winter of the Second World War, Canadian soldiers were tasked with clearing the Germans from the small island of Kapelsche Veer in the Maas River in the Netherlands. Dubbed “Operation Elephant”, the Lincoln and Welland Regiment, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada, and South Alberta Regiment saw heavy action there 26-31 January 1945. It was hard fighting under horrendous conditions and casualties were high on both sides, but our soldiers eventually triumphed. Pictured are men from the Lincoln and Welland Regiment the day after the Battle of Kapelsche Veer.
