Infantrymen of “C” Company, Royal Rifles of Canada, and their mascot en route to Hong Kong. Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, ca. 27 October 1941. Sadly, most of the men in this photo would be killed in action or die in Japanese prison work camps... Even their mascot would be killed in action when the Japanese over-ran Hong Kong. The dog, taught to play fetch by his handler picked up a hand grenade thrown by an attacking Japanese soldier and returned it to the Japanese, both the dog and the Japanese soldier died in the resulting explosion. The dog was decorated for valour after the war.
