Canadian Forces
Gerry Sellars
This photo shows just how far the majority of Canadian tanks made it up the Dieppe beach. Sadly most of these tanks were put out of action by the stones on the beach, not German fire. Many of these tanks fought as best they could from their stationary positions until they ran out of ammo or were blown up. Many of these crewmen were killed once they got out of their tanks to try to swim out to landing craft waiting for them. Many of the landing craft were piloted by Royal Marines and they should be given credit for attempting to run back in to rescue the men trapped on the beach. Many of these landing craft were in turn then blown up with the loss of their crews.
