A British Second World War tank crew check over belted 7.92mm ammunition for their BESA machine gun. Unprotected ammunition like this was easily damaged and so had to be carefully checked as a misfire in combat could lead to the destruction of the tank and the death of the crew. The cloth belts were reuseable and so also had to be checked for damage from previous firings. Once they have finished the ammunition will be boxed to protect it and stowed in their tank.

Gun Carrier (Universal/Windsor) brings in a batch of German prisoners during 158 Brigade’s attack. 158 Brigade (53 Division) was tasked to cross the Escaut Canal near Lommel, northern Belgium, in order to continue the advance into Holland. The Brigade’s night attack was launched on 17 – 18 September 1944 and met fierce resistance from the German parachutist defenders.
