A real ‘Fury’. This Churchill Mk. IV AVRE (Assault Vehicle Royal Engineers) was photographed in Europe in 1944. This photo is an excellent close up of the AVRE’s feared weapon, the 290mm Petard Mortar. The Mortar fired a 40lb (18kg) demolition projectile nicknamed the ‘Flying Dustbin’ The vehicle performed a number of important roles on the battlefield, such as Dozer, bridge carrier, facine carrier and ‘carpet layer’. The AVRE often worked with the Flamethrowing Churchill Crocodile to knock out pillboxes and bunkers. The AVRE would crack it open, and the Crocodile would hope in the flame. This tactic is often referred to as ‘Corkscrew and Blowtorch’. taken from fb/ Photo from: worldwarphotos
