Indians in Italy.

Indians in Italy.

H.M. Government/National Archives

Indian infantry advance through a shattered Italian town. Indian forces made a substantial contribution to the British war effort in both World Wars. Perhaps remembering the contribution made (at least traditionally) of the affair of the greased cartridges to launching the Indian Mutiny, the British exercised the maximum possible sensitivity to Indian cultural preferences and imperatives in both wars. Indian-style food was provided where possible (the Indians did not always agree). Another example is seen in this photo, in which Sikh soldiers wear the turban. This had first arisen as an issue in WW1, when Sikh soldiers flatly refused to shed their turbans for helmets. They were allowed to keep their turbans. Best regards, JR.
