British LTV “Fantails” or Buffalo amphibians transport German prisoners through a flooded landscape south of Comacchio, Northern Italy, 11 April 1945. The first of the two preliminary operations scheduled for each of the coastal flanks began on the night of 1 April when a flotilla of LTV's carrying the British 2d Commando Brigade set out across the Comacchio Lagoon's shallow waters on the Eighth Army's Adriatic flank. That operation was to be the first of a series of three designed to give the British forces advance positions from which to cover an amphibious right hook against Argenta.
