RAF ground personnel painting the British roundels over an Italian fighter captured intact. The aircraft has still the Fasci Littori (Fascist emblems) over the wings and the white cross on the rudder but has already received on the fin the British colors. The occurrence of this photo are unknown, but the airplane’s finish and the landscape suggest North Africa, end 1940 or beginning 1941 (absence of the fuselage white band). Victor Sierra

Change of markings

This Fiat CR.42, with wheel fairings removed, is one of the Italian aircraft captured by the British Forces during and after their advance in Cyrenaica, Operation Crusader, end 1941. In particular this aircraft, in the photo already in British markings, was captured intact and flown by No.238 Squadron, a Royal Air Force fighter Squadron at this time equipped with Hurricanes, when was based at El Gubbi, near Tobruk, between 19th January and 5th February 1942. Pausing for a moment on their push to Arnhem, (Market-Garden, Sep. 1944) two British soldiers enjoy an impromptu picnic provided by a grateful Dutch girl. - British leaders found that the crowds of joyous civilians made it very difficult for their troops "to keep alive to the possibility of a German attack."
