Prince Philip at Salem School in southern Germany

projectionist

Prince Philip is shown here, among the pupils at Salem school, in southern Germany, blond haired Philip stands before the flag pole with the Nazi flag flying. If the growing power of the Nazi party, evident in the shot of a swastika and of uniformed men giving Nazi salutes, had convinced his fellows of the wisdom of respect and deference, it does not seem to have impressed this defiant teenager. Philip was removed from the school for showing great disrespect for the Nazi flag, the salute and pretty much everthing Nazi. Indeed, he lasted at the school for just over a year. As the Jewish educationalist Kurt Hahn, the school’s co-founder, later wrote: ‘He was removed from Salem rather abruptly... whenever the Nazi salute was given he roared with laughter. After he had been admonished to caution he continued to be doubled up in uncontrollable mirth. The future Queen Elizabeth fell for young Philip the second she laid eyes on him at Dartmouth college in 1939. Philip's Uncle, Lord Louis Mountbatten arranged for young Mid-Shipman Philip to entertain King George's young daughters and it soon became evident that 13 year old Elizabeth was smitten with the young handsome Philip!
