Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery (1887 – 1976), nicknamed "Monty" was a Britiish Army officer. He saw action in the First World War and later in the Second World War, where he commanded the British 8th Army in North Africa. He subsequently commanded Eighth Army in Sicily and Italy before being given responsibility for planning the D-Day invasion in Normandy. He was in command of the ground forces in the Normandy Invasion. He then continued in command of the 21st Army Group in North West Europe. On May 4, 1945 he took the German surrender in northern Germany.
