Spitfires, part of the Duxford-based "Big Wing" in the air, Summer 1940.  The Big Wing, a somewhat controversial tactical deployment favoured by some Fighter Command officers, involved deploying 3-4 squadrons (up to 48 fighters) in a single, united formation with the object of enhancing coordination and striking power. I know it is not WW2 but, following recent comments on improvised armoured cars, I thought people might be interested to see this one, which was quickly improvised by the British in the course of the 7-day Republican Easter Rising in Dublin, 1916.  It was made up by mounting a modified smokebox for a steam railway engine at the Inchicore Railway Works.  It does not appear to have been very successful.  Its weak point, of course, was the pretty ordinary lorry cab at the front.  When the British attempted to drive it down Sackville Street (now O'Connell Street) it came under fire from riflemen on the roof of the General Post Office (headquarters of the Rising), until it stopped dead in the middle of the street.  The Republicans surmised that they had killed or seriously injured the driver.  The thing sat in the street for several hours (I do not envy the soldiers inside the boiler bit), and was eventually towed from the street after nightfall.  Sorry for the off-topic, JR.
