&quot;Major Renton `Spike` Galloway MC from Jesmond,Newcastle was wounded in the left arm at Verrieres on 14th June 1944 .He returned to 6th Durham light infantry on the 2nd August 1944 where he took over command of `A` Company He was killed in action near Le Plessis Grimault on the 12th August 1944 ,eye witnesses reported  he was killed by a german shell which clipped the trees and exploded above  killing Mr Galloway and four other ranks he was 32years old...&quot;

British soldiers, tasked with protecting the Arnhem Bridge, after their capture by the German forces. The Brits managed to hold the Bridge until the fifth day of the Operation, despite an acute lack of ammunition, some fighting with nothing but their combat knives. Despite their valiant effort, they were overwhelmed by the Germans in the early morning hours of the September 21st, 1944. Their last message, 'Out of Ammo - God save the King' was only heard by the German radio operators due to a breakdown of Allied communications. In the memory of the British soldiers who fought there, the Arnhem Bridge has been renamed 'John Frost Bridge', after the British units commander, Lt. Colonel John Frost.
