David Niven returned to his native England in October, 1939, was commissioned a lieutenant in the British Army. Here with a British General, he inspects an army vehicle. According to his publicist of the day, he went through the Dunkirk debacle, saw action with Commandos. In 1943, he became a lieutenant colonel. Many of these stars progressed in rank very quickly as their use as public relations vehicles were invaluable to the war effort.
