Dean of Canterbury Surveys his Ravaged Cathedral

gsellars

Bombs had fallen near Canterbury during the Battle of Britain, on October 11, when some of the stained glass was shattered. A direct attack was made by the Luftwaffe on the night of May 31-June 1, 1942, as a reprisal for the terrorist attack by the British Air Force on the inner city of Cologne, according to the German High Command. In this photo, the Dean, the Very Rev. Dr. Hewlett Johnson (left) and his Secretary, Mr. A.T. D'Eye, examine the wrecked Cathedral Library.
