HMS Grenville was sunk by a mine in the North Sea on 21st January 1940. The ship was lost with 81 of her crew; the rest were picked up by other ships in the area. The figure pictured clinging to the porthole is A. B. Bromfield the last sailor to leave the ship. HMS Grenville had a complement of 175 and a displacement of 1,485 tons.
