Sunderland P&W engine

Australian War Memorial

Official caption: "RAF Station Mount Batten, Plymouth, England. C. 1944-09. Port engine of a Sunderland aircraft of No. 10 Squadron RAAF operating with RAF Coastal Command." What the caption doesn't point out is that this is a Pratt & Whitney R-1800. 10 Sqn suggested fitting these engines to boost performance. The Air Ministry said it couldn't be done, shouldn't be done and musn't be done. Being Australian they just went ahead and did it. Strangely enough, the Sunderland Mk V was produced with..... Pratt & Whitney engines!
