Illingworth.
In December, 1942, the battle of Stalingrad was grinding towards a by now inevitable conclusion of catastrophic German defeat. British political cartoonist Illingworth shows Hitler as a baby, forced to eat his own words in the face of this defeat. Interestingly, the Soviet figure is labeled "Timoshenko". Marshal Symeon Timoshenko, a prominent Soviet commander early in the war, had been relieved of his command on this Front by Stalin as far back as July, 1942 (according to Beevor as part of measures aimed at stiffening morale in the face of the German 6th Army assault. The relevant figures at this stage would have been "Zhukov" or perhaps "Chuikov", but perhaps Illingworth had not taken full notice of these generals at this stage. Best regards, JR.
