The cover of the programme for the unofficial chess Olympiad, Munich 16 August - 3 September, 1936. The emblem of the Greater German Chess Federation (Grossdeutsches Schachbund - GSB) appears at bottom-left. The photograph shows the simplified form of the original "Bundesform" chess pieces, in particular, the "mushroom cap" pawns, the bullet-shaped bishop and the simplified knight. A fair amount of variation developed in later (and contemporary "unofficial") Bundesform chessmen. Full original Bundesform sets are now rare, mainly because very many of them were used in clubs, where individual pieces are often lost and substitute pieces (not always of the same pattern) included in a set, and incomplete sets are often broken up and recombined to produce complete (if composite) sets.
