Charity during the war: Lieutenant Nikolai Meroshenko was wounded and captured by German forces. Afterwards he was treated by German doctor and theologian Kurt Reuber and served as a "Hiwi" (voluntary helper) and interpreter for the Germans. The highly valued "Kamerad Nikolai" was killed in Stalingrad on December 23, 1942 while gathering wood.

Drawn with a piece of coal on the back of a Soviet map by German doctor and theologian Kurt Reuber, displayed in his bunker in Stalingrad and touched the hearts of many of his doomed comrades . The script says:

Kurt Reuber died on January 20, 1944 in the POW camp Jelabuga/Tatarstan of typhus. The Madonna of Stalingrad is today displayed in the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin.
