Punch magazine (RIP)
Mussolini justified the Italian conquest of Abyssinia primarily on the basis that Italy and its "legions" were entitled to take their "place in the Sun". A secondary justification was that it would bring the benefits of civilisation to backward, "barbarous" Abyssinia. This 1935 cartoon, from the now-defunct British humorous magazine, "Punch" comments sourly on the latter Italian claim. Best regards, JR.
