The Ustasha right-wing organization assumed a multiplicity of governing roles in wartime Croatia -- both civilian and military. The organization's frame of reference was generally nationalistic, anti-Serb, and pro-Catholic. Of course, the country pinned its hopes on Axis military victory.

Under German/Italian control, Croatian nationalism was alive and well during WW2. Under the national colors, a dramatic image extolling national homeland defense is captioned, if I am correct: "Never Slaves."
