David Low/London Evening Standard
Cartoon by David Low, published in the London "Evening Standard" newspaper, 24 April, 1945. As German resistance crumbles, a lone Alsatian dog howls amongst the ruins, under the gaze of a substantial military figure labelled "Zhukov". A subtle, ambiguous image. Although he observed the official positive line on the Soviets during the war, one suspects that he never for a moment lost his distrust of Stalin and his empire. Best regards, JR.
