Smith Gun in (fictional) action ...

The brave warriors of Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard platoon, on exercise, repel regular troops with a barrage of onions from their Smith Gun in "Dad's Army" episode, "We Know our Onions". This, apparently, was based on a real event, in which a Home Guard unit used another of their ... unusual weapons, a Northover Projector, to repel regulars in similar circumstances - although this seems even less likely than if a Smith Gun was used. Of course, onions were in very short supply in England in 1942; at the end of the television episode, Captain Mainwaring's men rush to gather up their "spent ammunition". Best regards, JR.
