Oberschütze (private first class) Arnold E.

This photo shows my granduncle Arnold E. (1920-1941). Unfortunately this is the only picture of him which is left. Arnold E. was member of the 7th company, Afrika-Regiment 361 of the 90. leichte (light) Afrika-Division. His lot was as well sad and tragic: On November 23, 1941 he got captured by British forces during the tank-battle of Sidi Rezegh (Libya). A couple of days later the transport-ship which should transfer the german POW's to Egypt was torpedoed and sunk by a German (!) submarine. Arnold E. and most of his comrades drowned in the Mediterranean. His body was never recovered but his name is listed on the cenotaph of the German cemetary of Tobruk. Unbelievable but true: the night Arnold got killed, his mother -far away in Germany- scared up in her sleep, saying to her husband: "Arnold is dead!" (ftg)
