Battle in the center of Cologne

US Army Photo**

American soldiers checking out an Opel 4 car on Christophstraße (Christoph street) during the battle for the center of Cologne, Germany. They are trying to assist a heavily wounded Cologne resident, Katharina Esser (1918-1945), lying on the ground, who was the passenger in the car, driven by businessman Hans Delling, as they attempted to get to the Cologne Cathedral and the Rhine river. Unfortunately, they drove into the line of fire between the American and German troops, and never made it. - In the background are a Sherman M4 and a Pershing M26 tanks of the American 3rd Armored Division.
