Tank on a ruined street

US Army Photo**

One of the American M4A1 (76) W Sherman tanks of the 771st separate tank battalion moves through a ruined street in the city of Münster, Germany, about 20 miles north of Dortmund. In the background is the church of St. Lambert. Separate tank battalions were military formations used by the United States Army during World War II, especially in the European Theater of Operations. These battalions were temporarily attached to infantry, armored, or airborne divisions according to need. They were also known as general headquarters tank battalions.
