Liberation of Breda, October, 1944.

Unknown private author.

Polish soldiers and Dutch civilians photographed during the liberation of Breda, south Netherlands, 29-30 October, 1944. Breda was fortunate to be liberated by the Polish 1st Armoured Division, commanded by veteran armoured commander General Stanislaw Maczek; this spared the town the worst of the horrors of the Netherlands' "hunger winter" of 1944/'45. Maczek, who died in exile in Great Britain, directed that his remains be buried, along with fallen soldiers of his Division, in Breda's military cemetery. Breda has shown its gratitude to its Polish liberators over the years. Monuments have been erected, and a substantial Polish contingent visits Breda for its annual Liberation Day. Best regards, JR.
