Flyers of the Royal Hungarian Air Force are decorated with the Iron Cross for their bravery and accomplishment on the Eastern Front.

During the 1944-1945 siege of Budapest, Hindy served as the (nominal) co-commander of the German and Hungarian forces defending the city.
