German Leadership

Highly decorated ...

?Heinrich Hoffmann

Formal studio portrait of Reichsmarschall Hermann Goering, wearing (from the top) the Grand Cross of the the Iron Cross, the Order "Pour le Merite" (WW1) and the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. The Grand Cross of the Iron Cross, a rarely-awarded decoration of the German Empire, was revived by Hitler early in WW1. One would have to suspect that Hitler did this mainly as yet another sop to Goering's vanity. As I recall, the award was made in recognition of Goering's role as leader of the Luftwaffe in the Polish and Western campaigns. Best regards, JR.
