American soldiers (left to right) Pvt. Robert L. Grassman, Pvt. Thomas Mandabach and Cpl. Virgil D. Teslow clean captured German MG-42 general-purpose machine guns in San Vittore del Lazio following the Allied success at the Battle of San Pietro Infine, a commune north-west of Naples, during the Italian Campaign. The battle involved Allied forces attacking from the south against heavily fortified positions of the German “Winter Line” in and around the town of San Pietro Infine. The Allied victory in the battle was crucial in the ultimate drive to the north to liberate Rome; 12 January 1944.
