Sonar image of recently discovered wreck of the U-550 located about 110km's off the island of Nantucket.  On April 16, 1944 the submarine managed to sink an American fuel tanker, the S.S. Pennsylvania, after she straggled behind her convoy.  But the response was swift as the U-550 was quickly attacked from the air and by USN destroyers however.  In the resulting fight, depth charges forced her to the surface.  The sub briefly engaged three U.S. Navy ships in a hopeless, brief firefight with her deck guns and she was subsequently rammed by the USN destroyer escort U.S.S. Gandy and the crew of U-550 were forced to abandon ship and give up the fight.  --Nickdfresh

Diver Joe Mazraani spent some 20 years looking for the last resting place of U-550.The team searched 259 km²  of seabed before finding the wreck.They keep the exact place secret for the moment to avoid the wreck being pillaged by other divers.According to the team,the wreck is relatively intact.Family of the victims will be told the location of their relatives last resting place.
44 crew lost their lives,12 survived the battle.
