During the morning of 6th June 1944, the war is now over for this German soldier. A medic from the 82nd Airborne Division offers him a cigarette.

This photo was taken in late July 1944 after the liberation of St.Lo, Normandie. The American forces soon nicknamed this town 'The Capital of Ruins'.
