Peppone's Comrades.

Other Forces

Peppone's Comrades.

Communist partisans celebrate liberation, Carrara, Italy, 1945. Note the odd mixture of weapons and uniform. The Communists were destined to be as disappointed as the Anarchists in the new Italian Republic. That having been said, Communism long remained an important force in north Italian politics, gradually divorcing itself from the inhibitions of Stalinism but, on the other hand, morphing into "tennis-playing Communism" (the rough equivalent of Irish "champagne Socialasm") - a sort of Communism for capitalists - and ultimately into the moderate Eurocommunism common among western European Communist Parties (except in the UK, France and Ireland) in the decade preceding the disintegration of the Soviet system in the East. Best regards, JR.
