German Artillery
~~~
One of the German 88mm guns covering the Halfaya Pass in Egypt, 1941. British soldiers nicknamed it the "Hellfire Pass". The German defenders were commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Wilhelm Bach ("the pastor of purgatory"), a WW1 veteran, who was a protestant priest in civil life. Eventually the Germans ran out of ammo, food and water and hat to surrender to the British (January 17, 1942). As a POW Wilhelm Bach died of cancer at Toronto/Canada on December 22, 1942.
