Men of the famed Australian 9th Infantry Division guard Italian and German POWS taken after Rommel's first unsuccessful assault on Tobruk in 1941. Such was the fame and prowess of this Division, that three years later in Normandy, when fighting had bogged down as the Allies sought to break out, Major-General Francis de Guingaund, (Chief of Staff to Field Marshal Montgomery's Land-force Headquarters) said: "My God, I wish we had 9th Australian Division with us this morning".
