Pontoon bridge

Members of the 77th Infantry Division erected a memorial to Ernie Pyle in Ie Shima, near Okinawa, on the spot where he was killed by machine gun fire in April 1945. Pyle, a Pulitzer Prize-winning war correspondent, was with the 77th when he was killed.
