American infantrymen advance through the streets of battle-scarred Carentan (France), won from the Germans on the 12th of June, 1944. The capture of the crossroads town consolidated the Allied beachheads, which freed th U.S. V Corps and VII Corps to attack toward the port city of Cherbourg.
