US Army

Rue Houlgate, Carentan, Normandy.

US National Archive.

US Army soldiers in Carentan, Normandy. The date is not certain, but it is most likely to have been on or after 14 June, 1944; the last serious German attempt to recapture the town was smashed by superior US forces on 13 June. I stand open to correction, but the gun in the 'photo appears to be a 57mm M1 antitank gun, the US-manufactured version of the British Royal Ordnance QF 6-pounder AT gun. If so, this would suggest that of the US units involved at Carentan, the soldiers shown here might belong to the 101st Airborne Division ("Screaming Eagles"), whose glider-borne antitank people were equippend with this weapon. Best regards, JR.
