The bombs dropped by the B-24 Liberators of the 15th Air Force’s 464th Bombardment Group, based at Pantanella Airfield, Foggia Airfield Complex, Southern Italy, during the bombing of the IG Farben synthetic oil and rubber plant on September 13th, 1944, seeming fall over the gas chambers at Auschwitz-Birkenau (Oswiecim). In reality the bombs continued on their ballistic route and hit the factory while a number of stray bombs hit Birkenau too and caused light damage. B-24 prophetically named 'Flak Magnet' by her crew depicting a sharks mouth nose art. Note also the extra armored plate added to the pilot's side. 'Flak Magnet' was hit and set on fire by flak over Hamm, Germany on the 22nd April 1944 while being flown by another crew (the original crew was on leave).

Flak Magnet

Enlargement of a section of a photograph of the snow-capped Birkenau Extermination Camp (Auschwitz or Oswiecim) taken by a Lockheed F-5 Lightning of 15th Air Force’s 5th Photo Recon Group, based at Pomigliano d’Arco, Naples, on December 21st, 1944. Further to an order issued by Himmler at the beginning of November to halt the gassings, the extermination installations were dismantled in November-December 1944, as can be seen in the photograph (Gas Chambers Partially Dismantled). Note the ruins of Crematorium IV, which was destroyed (high on the right) in the Sonderkommando uprising of October 7th, 1944.
