Western Desert, 1942-43: This photo was taken at the extreme forward positions around the Karmusat ar Rijam area near Gazala and shows soldiers of the Polish Independent Carpathian Rifles Brigade facing German and Italian forces. The Polish soldier operates a .30 cal US-made MG. The Poles fought valiantly during the desert campaign.
