Solothurn again - with a helmet question!

Another view of a Hungarian soldier with the 20mm Solothurn. Of all the photos I've found of Hungarians using this weapon, this is the one I've come across most often. And there is something that bothers me about it: there seems to be some kind of projection/object on the back of the soldier's helmet, as well as a regula-shaped dark patch on the helmet's right side. Does anybody know more about what this might be? I can't tell if it's a trick of the light, or some kind of band/pad,or what. And the Projection on the helmet - It looks something like a cross with a loop on the bottom -- I have no idea what that could be, assuming it actually IS on the helmet, and not something sticking up from the soldiers pack/bed roll. Imi, can you - or anybody else - clear up this minor mystery for me?
