Grossdeutschland - Tank Destruction Badge.

Bundesarchiv.

Young soldier of the élite "Grossdeutschland" Division presented with the Tank Destruction Badge in Silver (for one tank destruction) by his senior "Sarge", June 1944. The Tank Destruction Badge was awarded to soldiers from non-specialist antitank units. This usually involved the soldier attaching a magnetic mine to the target tank, a dangerous operation, especially when enemy infantry support was present. Notwithstanding this, the Heer engaged in a substantial amount of training for troops of all sorts in "tank destruction". Note the "Grossdeutschland" cuff title worn by the soldier on his right forearm, Heer-style (in contrast to "cuff titled" Waffen-SS units, who wore the band on the left forearm). Also, the NCO wears both the divisional cuff title and cuffband of rank on the left arm. He is also wearing the General Assault Badge - which suggests that he was a member of a specialist unit, such as the Division's artillery, or another "support" element. Best regards, JR.
