Burned-Earth

The evacuation of Finnmark in northern Norway, winter 1944/45. The battered Germans forced the entire Norwegian population in Finnmark to evacuate when the Red Army approached from the Murmansk Front. More or less all buildings and infrastructure were deliberately torched, and people in Finnmark suffered well into the 50s because of this burned earth-tactic. 60 000 were evacuated but many hid away and waited for the Russian "liberators".
